When it rains, it pours . . .

>> Thursday, May 28, 2009

This has been a horrible week:

- Chris is in the hospital with severe head pain, eye pain, and hemmoraging in his eyes (blood in his eyes). Doctor's have run a bunch of tests and are completely puzzled by what's causing it. It's breaking my heart to see him in pain and not be able to help him and make it better.
- Chris' dad was released from the hospital the very same day Chris got sick. He's not having a fun time as we were supposed to spend this week getting him settled in his new apartment and spending a lot of time with him, as this is a complete 180 from what his life was like before he went in the hospital (he's elderly)
- my car is on fritz, so I've been driving the van to and from the hospital (from Thornhill to Mississauga) every day - and now the van is also on the fritz
- I came home tonight to find that several shingles blew off my roof today, so with all this rain it leaked right through my ceiling and completely soaked my living room floor and sofa.

When it rains, it pours . . .

Love, Love, Love it!!

How completely awesome is the new Star Trek movie? I went to go see it (in IMAX) with my sister this afternoon, and wish I could go see it again tonight! I know that some hard-core Trek fans are griping about some things about the movie, but as someone who was pretty much raised on Star Trek, I personally thought it was great. There was no way J.J. Abrams (the director) could ever please everyone, and I thought the way he integrated the main characters and the core things that make Star Trek "Star Trek" into a plotline that could reinvent the franchise was genius. He captured that spirit and essence of the Star Trek universe and made it relevent for the modern movie audience. The actors were great (and great-looking btw - hello Chris Pine as Captain Kirk?) and were able to walk the line of being true to the history of the characters without falling into straight imitation.

If you're a fan of the Star Trek world, run to the theatre to see this movie. If you're not a fan of the Star Trek world, run to the theatre to see this movie. I for one will be going back to see it again (and definitely in IMAX - holy crap that IMAX screen is amazing!!)

Time for some Randomness!!

>> Saturday, May 2, 2009

Okay, so before I left for work yesterday I did this big long blog post about the current Swine Flu scare - I thought it was this really smart, insightful take on how the media is generating panic about something that might really not be as dangerous as everyone is making it out to be, and how "we" might just be looking for something to panic over and worry ourselves with. Turns out I'm not the smart cookie I thought I was, 'cause I didn't wait to save it before hitting "post" and for some reason instead of posting it, it was completely erased! Now I'm not really in the mood to try and remember everything I originally wrote down, so I thought it was time for a good old dose of randomness instead!! Here goes:

* Saw Hugh Jackman on Oprah yesterday - does he not seem like the nicest, most down-to-earth guy? And sooo funny how Oprah was completely gushing over him the whole time

* I'm getting over a week-long stomach flu - I can't even count the number of people who have said "ohhh, maybe you're pregnant!!" Nope - definitely not pregnant. Not that I wouldn't be excited if we were, but we're going to wait another couple of years before we go down that road

* Our house was without power for a day and a half last weekend. It wasn't too bad as it was warm out and I could go to the store to get some food, but it really made me think about how we're so tied to "the grid" and how much trouble we would all be in if something really terrible happened and we were all without power for a sustained period of time

* I had a big jerky Mc. Jerksters at the store last night. He was upset that we were closing at 10pm and that he and his girlfriend couldn't keep shopping. Umm, we're open for 12 hours a day buddy, it's not my problem you decide to start your shopping at 9:55pm

* I'm a little obsessed with the new Kelly Clarkson CD - 90% of the tracks on it are awesome and single-worthy

* How great is it that Spring is here and everything is blooming? I live for warm weather and am counting down the days 'till I can hit the beach!

* Why is it that the older I get, the less intimidated I get of people and the less I care about what people think of me, but every once and awhile I have an encounter with someone that makes me feel really self-conscious?

* I signed up for Twitter to see what it was, but I still don't really understand what it's purpose is and what the big deal is. I think it's a fad that won't hang around for too long

* Watched "Bride Wars" the other night and loved the wedding dress that Kate Hudson's character wore at the end. I spent the rest of the night looking through all of my wedding pics and reminisceing about how great of a day it was, and how rockin' my dress was! Also totally excited about my sister's wedding at the end of June - I am currently the "guardian" of her dress, and it is stunning!!

* I miss Dave Devall doing the weather on CTV - it's just not the same without him!

* Why is it that "going green" always seems so much more expensive? I really want Chris and I to be more eco-friendly, I just don't know if we can afford it!

* I'm really enjoying being 29. I think it suits me well (although I admit I think I'll always be a perpetual 24 year old)

Alright - that's it for now. My next post will probably be another Uganda trip update, so stay tuned!
